Why an MBA Concentration in Data Analytics?
An MBA Concentration in Data Analytics is an ideal option for those who want a career that draws on their abilities to develop their problem-solving strengths and decision-making skill sets through the use of data analysis, statistical models, and other quantitative methods.
Data analytics takes a deeper dive into datasets than business analytics. Gain expertise in gathering, preparing, and cleaning data. Develop methods of analysis and interpretation to present data to business leaders in a clear and concise manner that allows executives to make tough business decisions. This is a fast-growing industry with a great necessity for highly skilled workers.
Data analytics skills are in demand internationally by all industries. Long-term career goals might include positions such as:
- data analyst;
- data scientist;
- data engineer;
- data analytics consultant; and
- business intelligence analyst.
MBA Curriculum Requirements and Options
Core, Customizable, and Foundational Course Requirements
Rowan MBA students complete 18 credits of required coursework to satisfy the core requirements of the 36-credit curriculum. The core requirements can be completed in an individualized order, depending on the student’s needs.
Rowan MBA students also enjoy the freedom to customize the remaining 18 credits (6 three-credit courses) to meet their individual career pursuits. The 18 customizable credits (6 courses) can be arranged to include two areas of concentration or one area of concentration plus three elective courses.
Some foundational coursework may be required, which can be done in a variety of ways, such as equivalent undergraduate courses, noncredit tests, online courses, and community college classes. Data Analytics Concentration Coursework
Become an exceptional critical thinker and learn how to solve business problems using software, data, and computational tools. Improve your organizational efficiency and gain experience in data mining, statistical analysis, data engineering, data warehousing, business intelligence and strategy, data visualization and presentation, and operations-related data analytics.
Rowan MBA students who pursue a Concentration in Data Analytics select 3 courses (9 credits) to satisfy the Concentration. Of the three courses, two are required:
- Database Design
- Database Warehousing & Business Intelligence
Students then choose one elective course tailored toward achieving their particular interests and career goals.
MBA Students have the potential to take more than three classes from the list below, depending on their interests and goals and the flexibility and space available in their individual course of study. MIS 02538 - Database Design (3 credits)
- This course explores the fundamentals of designing a database. It emphasizes the relational model; however, the course also explores the hierarchical and network models. Additionally, the course covers such topics as data insertion, modification, and extraction using SQL. CASE tools and database management tools will be employed.
MIS 02540 - Database Warehousing & Business Intelligence
MIS 02540 - Database Warehousing & Business Intelligence (3 credits)
- This course covers the concepts, principles, and tools of data warehousing technology as a component and function of Business Intelligence. It explores how to solve business problems by using an organization’s data to gain new insights into its operations. Additionally, it introduces the approaches, roles, and responsibilities associated with the design and implementation of a data warehouse. This course leverages a portfolio of SQL Server tools for hands-on experience in implementing a solution through assignments, lab exercises, and projects.

CS 02505 - Data Mining I (3 credits)
- This is a first graduate level course in Data Mining, which is designed to teach students the key steps in data mining, along with the primary algorithms related to data acquisition, cleansing, and supervised and unsupervised learning.
CS 02625 - Data Quality / Web Text Mining
CS 02625 - Data Quality / Web Text Mining (3 credits)
- This course studies data quality problems and solutions in the context of text and web mining, which is the exploration of vast amounts of digitized text for use in knowledge discovery or more particularly drug discovery in the biomedical field.
DA 02510 - Visual Analytics
DA 02510 - Visual Analytics (3 credits)
- This is a graduate level course that investigates visual analytics tools and techniques used to synthesize information and derive insight from massive, dynamic, ambiguous, and often conflicting data, and to communicate the findings effectively for decision-making. Extensive use of case studies based on real-world events will be used to illustrate course concepts. Students will be required to present recent conference or journal papers from the visual analytics literature and to apply visual analytics techniques toward a focused research problem in a real-world application or a domain of interest.
