Management Information Systems Concentration in Rowan's MBA
Why an MBA Concentration in Management Information Systems?
The MBA Concentration in Management Information Systems (MIS) prepares students for employment in a world of rapidly changing technology by teaching them to develop business solutions through the use of information systems and technology resources. This Concentration also enhances the skill set of current managers in technologies, systems, or information security roles.
This Concentration is an ideal choice for analytical problem-solvers who are effective communicators interested in project management, daily operations, computer information systems design and implementation, as well as utilizing technology to leverage an organization to the maximum benefit for marketability, profitability, productivity, and efficiency.
Students will gain experience:
- dealing with technological issues, such as systems security, encryption, and e-commerce payment mechanisms;
- understanding the role humans play in developing technology-based solutions; and
- learning to manage technology-related projects as well as how to aggregate and disseminate information systems data.
The need for experts in information systems management is currently skyrocketing in every industry and sector, from retail to health care to air travel and airports to financial services and manufacturing.
Career goals might include positions such as:
- business intelligence analyst;
- systems developer;
- information technology consultant;
- project manager;
- computer systems analyst;
- business application developer; and
- other IT/IS jobs.
MBA Curriculum Requirements and Options
Core, Customizable, and Foundational Course Requirements
Rowan MBA students complete 18 credits of required coursework to satisfy the core requirements of the 36-credit curriculum. The core requirements can be completed in an individualized order, depending on the student’s needs.
Rowan MBA students also enjoy the freedom to customize the remaining 18 credits (6 three-credit courses) to meet their individual career pursuits. The 18 customizable credits (6 courses) can be arranged to include two areas of concentration or one area of concentration plus three elective courses.
Some foundational coursework may be required, which can be done in a variety of ways, such as equivalent undergraduate courses, noncredit tests, online courses, and community college classes. MBA Students have the potential to take more than three classes from the list below, depending on their interests and goals and the flexibility and space available in their individual course of study. MIS 02515 - Electronic Commerce
MIS 02515 - Electronic Commerce (3 credits)
- This course will introduce students to electronic business. It will cover such diverse issues as: e-commerce payment mechanisms, encryption and authentication of data, web assurance, electronic data interchange, legal issues on the web, and web marketing. There will also be a lab component that will provide students with exposure to and practice in web page design and creation.

MIS 02522 - Systems Analysis and Design (3 credits)
- This course explains the methodology and techniques in analysis and design of computer information systems. The systems analyst, the architect of information systems, is a liaison between user and programmer. The roles and responsibilities of the systems analyst are emphasized at all stages of the systems development life cycle.
MIS 02525 - Project Management
MIS 02525 - Project Management (3 credits)
- In this course, students will learn the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) as put forward by the professional association, the Project Management Institute (PMI). Students will not only study the various phases and documents involved in project management, they will also gain experience creating each of the documents for a given project.

MIS 02530 - Information Security for Managers (3 credits)

This course is designed to provide students an overview of the strategies and skills required to develop and manage an Information Security Program. The course focuses primarily on information security governance, program development and management, incident management and risk management. Students will gain the skills needed to establish information security strategies, build and manage an information security program, prepare for and respond to security incidents and business continuity planning.

MIS 02538 - Database Design
MIS 02538 - Database Design (3 credits)

This course explores the fundamentals of designing a database. It emphasizes the relational model; however, the course also explores the hierarchical and network models. Additionally, the course covers such topics as data insertion, modification, and extraction using SQL. CASE tools and database management tools will be employed.
