Tips for Designing Your Poster

Before Creating Your Poster Session, You Should Consider the Following:

  • What is the objective of your poster?
  • What is the key message?
  • What's a logical sequence for your information?
  • Who is your audience? Are they already familiar with your research?

Gathering & Prioritizing Your Information:

Decide what the most important element of your poster is and make it stand out. Consider what information your audience needs before they reach each section of your presentation.

Begin your presentation by summarizing the objective of your research and providing a brief background. Also, consider how you're going to lay out your information.

Here are a few examples:

Selecting Your Color Theme:

Color, like font styles, can be used to break up information and make your presentation visually appealing. Use no more than 2-3 different colors on your poster. You can use the following online tools to help select colors/color palettes: https://color.adobe.com/ or https://coolors.co/.

Use of Text:

Break text down into small "easy to read" chunks

Use bullet points, phrases/short sentences rather than paragraphs

Begin each section with headers, using larger text

Always use fonts that are easy to read

Make sure guests can read the poster from a distance of 5-10 feet.

Use graphics and limited color for illustration. Use no more than 2-3 font styles (One for major headers, another for sub-headings, and another for your body text).

Include key references (APA format)

Prepare a 3-5 minutes presentation to explain your research

Make sure to include a title for the poster project, the names of the students involved

in the project, and the name ofyour faculty mentor.

Use Graphics to Speak for Your Info/Data:

Graphics, charts, pictures, and photographs help convey your message and additionally break up text.
